Matthias A. ZUMSTEIN

Matthias Zumstein is a renowned specialist in surgical orthopedics and traumatology. He completed his medical training at the University of Bern, obtaining his doctorate degree. In 2017, he was appointed as a professor.
Currently, Matthias Zumstein leads the team for shoulder, elbow, and sports orthopedics at Orthopädie Sonnenhof in Bern and at Sportclinic #1. In addition to his role as a professor at the University of Bern, he also serves as an Honorary Professor at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia.
He underwent specialized training in shoulder, elbow, and sports orthopedics in Zurich and Bern. Furthermore, he completed clinical and scientific fellowships in shoulder orthopedics and sports orthopedics at the University Hospital in Nice, France, as well as in elbow and wrist surgery at the University Hospital in Adelaide, Australia.
Matthias Zumstein is an active member of the Swiss Society of Orthopedics and Traumatology (swiss orthopaedics) and has chaired this organisation since July 2024. Additionally, he served as a board member of the European Society for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (SECEC/ESSSE) for many years.
His impressive scientific portfolio includes over 80 peer-reviewed publications, 25 review articles, and 21 book chapters. Moreover, he has delivered over 300 presentations at national and international conferences, including more than 150 invited lectures. Matthias Zumstein has been recognized for his research with various awards, including twice receiving the highest-funded scientific award in shoulder surgery, the Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES), as well as additional awards from DVSE, swiss orthopaedics, the Société Francophone d’Arthroscopie, and the Lipmann-Kessel Prize from the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.
